Why are some lines of text broken into separate parts and grouped together?

Unfortunately at this time, Canva does not allow for kerning text (adjusting the space between individual letters). It allows for adjusting leading, but this adjustment is universally applied to words and paragraphs and doesn’t account for instances where some letters are visually more spaced apart than others. What results is oftentimes letterforms with obvious messy gaps.

In summary: some of my Canva design templates feature text that is separated then regrouped together to visually achieve the look of balanced kerning. ✨

Here’s hoping Canva introduces actual kerning to its features in the near future!

How do I edit curved text in Canva for the template I purchased?

For one directional curved text, just edit it as you would text on a straight line. Click into the text box, delete the placeholder text and replace with your own.

For text in a wave formation, in Canva this is composed of multiple text boxes on separate curves. Divide your text phrase into segments and type/paste the portions into each text box. Don’t be afraid to move the text boxes around so they line up visually in a natural wave formation.

How do I place my photo in a design that has a design element overlay in Canva?

Some designs feature an illustration or frame overlay that sits above the photo. You will need to do a few simple steps to make sure it's placed properly because of the way Canva handles layers.

  1. First, upload your photo image to Canva and place it on your canvas so it's centered and large enough to fill the frame or space required by the design.

  2. Click on your photo, then click Position in the menu that appears above it. Then click the Layers (tab), and you will then be able to drag your photo image layer below the others in the list of layers.

  3. If it doesn’t look quite right and you still need to adjust the placement of your photo, drag the photo layer back above the rest in the Layers panel, then readjust the photo element itself on the canvas. Repeat the layer re-arrangement in the Layers panel (steps 1 and 2) once done.
